Welsh Tax Calculator 2026/27
Since 2019 the Senedd has set Welsh rates of Income Tax. In practice, 10p in each band goes to the Welsh Government, and the Welsh rate is currently set at 10p, so totals match England.

How this calculation works
- 01Start with your gross income and convert it to an annual figure.
- 02Take off salary sacrifice and net pay pension contributions.
- 03Apply your Personal Allowance, tapered above £100,000 or set by your tax code.
- 04Calculate Income Tax band by band using rates for your region.
- 05Calculate employee National Insurance on earnings after salary sacrifice.
- 06Deduct relief at source pension contributions at 80% of the gross amount.
- 07Apply student and postgraduate loan repayments above each threshold.
- 08Subtract everything to reach estimated net pay, then split it by period.
Real payroll can differ because tax and NI are worked out per pay period, and your tax code may include adjustments HMRC hasn't told you about. See our methodology.
How Welsh rates of Income Tax work
UK rates are reduced by 10p in every band, and the Welsh Government adds its own rate back on top. With the Welsh rate at 10p, the combined result is 20%, 40% and 45%, the same as England. Your tax code carries a C prefix so HMRC can pass the Welsh share to Cardiff.
If the Senedd ever changes the Welsh rate, we'll update the Welsh configuration without affecting other regions.
Understanding your wales tax calculator result
The result identifies you as a Welsh taxpayer and applies the combined UK and Welsh rates for earnings. The amount currently matches England, but the regional selection remains important for the tax code and future rate changes.
Checking a C-prefixed tax code
Scenario: Select Wales and enter the gross pay shown on your payslip. In advanced options, use the C-prefixed code issued by HMRC.
How to use the result: The current tax total should normally match an equivalent English calculation. The code still tells payroll and HMRC that the Welsh share of Income Tax applies.
Details to check before relying on the estimate
- Use Wales based on your main home, not the workplace.
- A missing C prefix may mean HMRC has an old address.
- National Insurance does not change between UK nations.
Putting the estimate into perspective
A matching total under another region does not establish that your taxpayer status is right. Keep the regional choice consistent with your records when planning or checking pay.
