How this calculation works

  1. 01Start with your gross income and convert it to an annual figure.
  2. 02Take off salary sacrifice and net pay pension contributions.
  3. 03Apply your Personal Allowance, tapered above £100,000 or set by your tax code.
  4. 04Calculate Income Tax band by band using rates for your region.
  5. 05Calculate employee National Insurance on earnings after salary sacrifice.
  6. 06Deduct relief at source pension contributions at 80% of the gross amount.
  7. 07Apply student and postgraduate loan repayments above each threshold.
  8. 08Subtract everything to reach estimated net pay, then split it by period.

Real payroll can differ because tax and NI are worked out per pay period, and your tax code may include adjustments HMRC hasn't told you about. See our methodology.

What's different in Northern Ireland

For Income Tax and NI, nothing. Differences appear elsewhere: property purchases pay Stamp Duty Land Tax like England, domestic rates replace council tax, and tuition-fee student loans are generally Plan 1, which has a lower repayment threshold than Plan 2.

If you live in Northern Ireland and work in the Republic of Ireland, cross-border rules apply that this calculator doesn't cover.

Understanding your northern ireland tax calculator result

The calculation uses the same earnings tax bands as England and UK-wide National Insurance. It is intended for Northern Ireland residents with ordinary UK employment income.

Estimating pay for a Northern Ireland role

Scenario: Enter the gross salary and any relevant pension or student loan details. Select the loan plan from your account rather than guessing from where you now live.

How to use the result: The result shows UK PAYE deductions for the year. Cross-border workers with income or residence in the Republic of Ireland may need specialist advice beyond this estimate.

Details to check before relying on the estimate

  • Student loan plans depend on where and when you studied.
  • Cross-border tax relief is outside this calculator.
  • Property rates are not a payroll deduction.

Putting the estimate into perspective

If a role involves cross-border income or residence, do not assume this ordinary employment estimate settles the wider tax position. Keep that issue separate from comparing UK salary figures.
